Yesterday it was announced that actress Zoe Saldana is in negotiations to play the female lead in Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy. According to The Hollywood Reporter, if a deal is reached, Saldana would play Gamora, the green-skinned humanoid who is the last of a species that was exterminated by a race known as the Badoon. She was raised and trained by Thanos who found the child and decided to use her as a weapon. Gamora later turned against Thanos and joined the Guardians of the Galaxy. She’s a skilled assassin and was cybernetically enhance by Thanos to superhuman levels.
If an agreement is reached, Saldana would join Chris Pratt, who is playing Star-Lord, and Dave Bautista, who’s portraying Drax the Destroyer, in space action adventure film. The giant tree-man Groot, and Rocket Raccoon, a genetically engineered animal with a knack for guns and explosives are the remaining characters of the galactic superhero group who have yet to be cast.
Saldana already has plenty of experience in the sci-fi realm as she’s reprising her role as Uhura in Star Trek Into Darkness, which opens May 17, and will also return as the blue skinned alien Neytiri for Avatar 2. Saldana recently finishing filming the crime drama Out of the Furnace which also stars The Dark Knight Rises Christian Bale.
