Review: Wonder Woman #1

WONDER WOMAN #1

WONDER WOMAN #1 took me two reads before I was able to appreciate what was truly happening within it’s pages. At first I’d felt as if the comic didn’t have much to offer, but upon further investigation (and the good word of Mr. Bobby Shortle) I found that I’d clearly missed the mark on my first go with the book. DC’s resident Amazon heroin finds herself at the mercy of fate as she is tasked with the chore of protecting a lone woman, Zola, who seems to run in to trouble no matter where she goes.

It’s really the mystery of who this woman is and why she’s being hunted that drives this particular book. For one thing, the villains feel particularly malevolent during the books events. Someone or something in particular really wants the mysterious Zola dead and will stop at nothing to see it done. After re-reading the events of this book I can say honestly that I’m now excited to see where the story goes. With lots of references to the Greek gods, decapitated horses, and my favorite Amazon taking control I would only imagine that it gets better.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW?
It would probably help to have a working knowledge of the many Gods pertaining to Wonder Woman’s universe but I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to just dive right into this one. Things tend to explain themselves over a few issues and I don’t see why this would be any different.

VERDICT
Buy it – The punch to the gut at the end of the book is worth your investigating. There also seems to be some pretty wicked characters brewing and that is always a plus.
