Favorite Comic Book Covers of the Week Hullabaloo!

Hey, thanks for checking out Talking Comics: Favorite Comic Book Covers of the Week!

You’ve got to admit, New Comic Book Release Day is pretty much the best day of the week. It’s the day, as comic readers, that we’re introduced to new worlds, witness the next chapter in a continuing saga, or fall in love with a character or creator for the first time. I could go on and on, but I think you’ve already gotten my point. That point being … comics are awesome! In fact, they’re so awesome that even the covers of these books are ofttimes incredible works of art. With that in mind, Bob and Steve are here to share with you some of their favorite covers! So go ahead, take a few moments for yourself (haven’t you earned it?), and feast your eyes on some truly inspired comic book cover art!

Curse Words #5

Written by Charles Soule

Art by Ryan Browne

Cover Art by Jamie McKelvie

Oh wow! I think I might need to get my hands on some Curse Words. I’m loving that glacial sword, practical armor, and killer makeup scheme.

Grrl Scouts #1

Words and Art by Jim Mahfood

Oh man, this cover has me feeling like I’m ready to rock out with Grrl Scouts! I can’t wait to read this issue over the weekend.

Generation X #1

Written by Christina Strain

Art by Amilcar Pinna

Cover Art by Kevin Wada (Hip-Hop Variant Cover)

Simple, elegant, iconic. Sometimes, that’s all you need.

Jughead #15

Written by Ryan North – Mark Waid

Art by Derek Charm – Ian Flynn

Cover Art by Marguerite Sauvage

Ha ha ha! Check out King Jugie and his Burger Babes of Riverdale. What a pimp!

Bob Reyer’s Favorite Comic Book Covers of the Week

EMPOWERED: SOLDIER OF LOVE #3 (Dark Horse)

Writer: Adam Warren
Artist/Cover: Karla Diaz

The “Soldado del Amor” y Senor Pangolin look as if they might have won this battle with Emp and destroyed love on a grand scale…and in the heart of poor Ninjette!

STARSTRUCK: OLD PROLDIERS NEVER DIE #4 (IDW)

Writer: Elaine Lee
Artist/Cover: Michael Kaluta

I’m not entirely sure why, but I’m getting an “Alice in Wonderland” vibe from this cover by the legendary Mike Kaluta!

PAPER GIRLS #14 (Image)

Writer: Brian K, Vaughn
Artist/Cover: Cliff Chiang

The solicitations say “Here comes the future!”, and that’s about the only thing we haven’t seen in this amazing series!

JEAN GREY #1 (Marvel)

Writer; Dennis Hopeless
Artist: Victor Ibanez
Variant Cover: David Williams

Aping a feature out of Patsy Walker’s old modelling pal Millie Perkins’ book, this “Millie the Phoenix” cover by David Williams gave me a big smile.

HAWKEYE #5 (Marvel)

Writer: Kelly Thompson
Artist: Michael Walsh
Cover: Julian Torino Tedesco

You can feel the the rush of the wind flying past you on this great action cover by Julian Tedesco!

Before I go, a quick side-bar; there’s been some kvetching about the “hip holes” on Kate’s “work clothes”–some of it quite humourously in the book itself! Anyway, I’m just here to tell you that Ms. Bishop’s outfit is a wonderful homage to an iconic look sported by Diana Rigg as Emma Peel in “The Avengers”:

(I still have a crush on Diana Rigg all these years later!)
.
MS. MARVEL #18 (Marvel)

Writer: G. Willow Wilson
Artist: Takeshi Miyagawa
Cover: Nelson Blake II

What’s to say but “A-w-w-w-w…”! Nelson Blake has delivered a lovely but bittersweet Valentine to estranged friends Kamala and Bruno.

WONDER WOMAN #22 (DC)

Writer: Greg Rucka
Artist/Cover: Bilquis Evely

No spoilers here, but if you’ve read #21, this image by the amazing Ms. Evely might take on some interesting undertones!

BUG! #1 (DC)

Writer: Lee Allred
Artist/Cover: Michael & Laura Allred

A lesser Jack Kirby creation gets the “All-Allreds” treatment behind this history-laden cover–I’m in!

BATGIRL & THE BIRDS OF PREY #10 (DC)

Writer: Julie Benson; Shawna Benson
Artist: Roge Antonia
Cover: Yannick Paquette

I absolutely love this creepy image by Mr. Paquette; the book…not so much, but I may try this due to the cover!

SHADE THE CHANGING GIRL #8 (DC)

Writer: Cecila Castelucci
Artist: Marley Zarcone
Cover: Becky Cloonan

“Last stop”, huh? Where–Jurassic Park? As always, Becky Cloonan is a master of setting an eerie mood!

GENERATION X #1 (Marvel)

Writer: Christina Strain
Artist: Amilcar Pinna
Cover: Terry Dodson

Terry Dodson always makes these “group pictures” come alive through body language and expressions…see our girl Jubilee as an example!

BATWOMAN #3 (DC)

Writer: Marguerite Bennett; James Tynion IV
Artist: Steve Epting
Variant Cover: JG Jones

I always pick up the Steve Epting covers on Batwoman, but this very techno-creepy image by JG Jones will have me double-dipping!

MIGHTY THOR #19 (Marvel)

Writer: Jason Aaron
Artist/Cover: Russell Dauterman

Of course it will take two Thors to combat the Phoenix Force, and who better to illustrate that than the redoubtable Mr. Dauterman?

FLASH #22 (DC)

Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Howard Porter
Cover: Jason Fabok

Yes–Jay Garrick is back, and this homage to his first appearance back in 1940 is a perfect way to,,,hit the ground running. (Sorry.) Here’s the original:
