Supergirl opens this week with Mr. Mxyzptlk professing his love for Kara, sending Mon-El to the DEO in his boxers, and tries to wow Kara even though she declines. The opening immediately shows what kind of ride we’re in for. And for those unfamiliar, Mr. Mxyzptlk is from the 5th dimension and like to wreck havoc by playing tricks on people in other dimensions.
This episode revolves all around Valentine’s Day, which would’ve been a better fit in last week’s slot. However, it’s not so late that it makes this episode bad by any means. A lot happens in the way of personal relationships. J’onn is going to send M’gann a message and Winn gets a date. Alex and Maggie have some things to work through and Kara and Mon-El are still figuring things out.
Alex and Kara have a nice sisterly moment when Alex comes to her for advice. The focus on personal relationships this episode really started to shine here. Each character has their own things to work out and sometimes it’s easier to do that with someone else. Maggie comes to realize this when she storms out on Alex and it makes for a nice moment towards the end of the episode. Mon-El, on the other hand, has some jealousy issues to work out. He actually believes Kara when she says she’s going to marry him, even though we all know she’s not.
Mr. Mxyzptlk makes his way to the Fortress of Solitude for what he thinks will be a wedding. Kara shows up as Supergirl instead of being in a wedding dress. By luring him there, she makes sure no one else will get hurt and threatens to blow up the entire place with them in it. Little does Mr. Mxyzptlk know, she’s actually pulled one over on him. Instead of making him say his name, she recalls what J’onn said earlier about how writing something is truly saying it on some worlds. She cleverly set the cancellation code to be his name spelled backwards, which will send him back to the 5th dimension.
It’s nice to see that the show stuck so closely to the comics for this. Mr. Mxyzptlk wasn’t portrayed the same way, but his story was accurate. This was an interesting character to take on for the show and it paid off in the end. Although, he’s someone who could easily cause so much destruction so it was a little disappointing that he brought back Parasite. It would have been nice to see a different obstacle for Supergirl to face.
The episode ends with Kara telling Mon-El that she was lying to him during their big fight at the DEO after he apologizes for being an idiot. It will be interesting to see how their relationship progresses considering how many times they’ve already butt heads. I’m still not a huge fan of it, but I’m willing to give them a chance. Overall, this is a fun episode and they kept things interesting.
