Favorite Comic Book Covers: Bob Reyer Special Edition
Hey, Steve Seigh here, I’d like to thank you for checking out Talking Comics: Favorite Comic Book Covers of the Week!
In the weeks that have followed my unfortunate hospital stay, I’ve let this column lapse pretty hard. My sincerest apologies to you all for allowing that to happen, and especially to my good friend Bob Reyer, who has been emailing me his picks every week without fail. Rather than allow his efforts to go unappreciated while rotting in my inbox, I thought I’d put together this special presentation of Bob’s favorite covers from the past few weeks. I hope to resume the column full-throttle by next week. Until then, please enjoy this delightfully colorful and varied collection of Bob’s selections!
Cheers!
SPIDER-WOMAN #17 (Marvel)
Writer: Dennis Hopeless
Artist: Veronica Fish
Cover: Javier Rodriguez
As this is the last issue, it’s lovely that Javier Rodriguez is back to do one more cover. (As I said on-air last month, this image invokes for me the final scene in the 1961 film “The Misfits”, in which Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable, each making their final appearance on-screen, drive off into the desert (and Heaven?) together:
CLEAN ROOM #17 (DC)
Writer: Gail Simone
Artist: Walter Geovani
Cover: Jenny Frison
I have to say that as this series as gone on, I think better of Astrid Mueller than I did, but seeing what she’s seeing in the mirror might just flip the script!
BOOSTER GOLD/FLINTSTONES #31 (DC)
Writer: Mark Russell
Artist: Rick Leonardi
Cover: Michael & Laura Allred
“The team-up you’ve been waiting to see!”…well, probably not, but it looks cool thanks to this “Allredian” cover!
HENCHGIRL TPB (Dark Horse)
Writer/Artist/Cover: Kristen Gudsnuk
Ms. Gudsnuk’s charming and witty super-hero parody comes to trade via Dark Horse under this neat image that winks at the John Byrne/Terry Austin cover to X-Men #141:
STARSTRUCK: OLD PROLDIERS NEVER DIE #3 (IDW)
Writer: Elaine Lee
Artist/Cover: Michael W. Kaluta
New tales of this classic series…with the original creators…and with this gorgeous cover…I’m in!
PAPER GIRLS #13 (Image)
Writer: Brian K. Vaughn
Artist/Cover: Cliff Chiang
The Cliff Chiang covers for this series are always magnificent, so it’s high time that I mention that here!
GIANT DAYS #6 (Boom!)
Writer: John Allison
Artist/Cover: Max Sarin
The holidays aren’t over yet, as we’re getting the gift of an over-sized Giant Days issue with this charming cover by Ms. Max Sarin!
AVENGERS #6 (Marvel)
Writer: Mark Waid
Artist: Mike Del Mundo
Cover: Alex Ross
I’m always up for an Alex Ross homage such as this one that references the splash page from Avengers Annual #2:
HARLEY QUINN #17 (DC)
Writer: Amanda Conner; Jimmy Palmiotti; Paul Dini
Artist: John Timms; Bret Blevins
Cover: Amanda Conner
As this issue contains a back-up story by Harley’s co-creator Paul Dini, this great cover by Amanda Conner is picture-perfect!
UNSTOPPABLE WASP #4 (Marvel)
Writer: Jeremy Whitley
Artist/Cover: Elsa Charretier
My favorite cover of the week comes from my favorite new book of the year!
ONCE AND FUTURE QUEEN #2 (Dark Horse)
Writer: Adam P. Knave; D.J. Kirkbride
Artist/Cover: Nick Brokenshire
I love a “story-so-far” cover that can remind you of something that you enjoyed…but didn’t remember until seeing it, which is the case for this evocative image, and the one to follow…
HELENA CRASH #2 (IDW)
Writer: Fabian Rangel
Artist/Cover: Warwick Johnson-Caldwell
I very much enjoyed the first issue (Thanks, Joey!), and seeing this cover drew me right back in!
POWER MAN & IRON FIST #15 (Marvel)
Writer: David F. Walker
Artist/Cover: Sanford Greene
With this series coming to a close, I need to mention how much I’ve loved what Mr. Walker & Mr. Greene have done in keeping these characters” past alive whilst also looking forward, something that can be seen right here!
WONDER WOMAN #20 (DC)
Writer: Greg Rucka
Artist/Cover: Bilquis Evely
Considering how formidable Veronica Cale is, it’s hard to know who has the upper hand on this cover by the equally-formidable Ms. Evely!
GOTHAM ACADEMY: SECOND SEMESTER #8 (DC)
Writer: Brendan Fletcher; Becky Cloonan; Karl Kerschl
Artist: Adam Archer; Sandra Hope
Cover: Karl Kerschl
Hoo-boy, it looks as if Olive Silverlock has gone a bit rogue, doesn’t it? Here’s hoping the Academy can survive this “midnight ride”! Speaking of things Gotham-related, April 7th was “Misfit Appreciation Day”, so here’s my favorite entry featuring Charlotte Gage-Radcliffe:
This amazing homage by episoltsodark4 on DeviantArt!
For a real cover featuring Ms. Gage-Radcliffe…
BIRDS OF PREY #103 (2007/DC)
Writer: Gail Simone
Artist: Nicola Scott
Cover: Stephane Roux
NICK FURY #1 (Marvel)
Writer: James Robinson
Artist: Aco
Variant Cover: Greg Land
As a HUGE fan of the Silver Age era of Nick Fury, I’m going to try and find a copy of this variant, as Greg Land does a great job capturing that “Steranko thing”!
BATWOMAN #2 (DC)
Writer: Marguerite Bennett; James Tynion IV
Artist/Cover: Steve Epting
Kate has her “Dark Knight” entrance down pat in this powerful Steve Epting image!
INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #6 (Marvel)
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Stefano Caselli
Variant Cover: Leinil Francis Yu
Speaking of “powerful”, this is a great look at the forces that Jean Grey can command, although what this image has to do with Iron Man, I’ve no clue!
MS. MARVEL #17 (Marvel)
Writer: G. Willow Wilson
Artist: Takeshi Miyagawa
Cover: Nelson Blake II
What a perfect image for arc-finisher!
For 26 April:
MOON GIRL & DEVIL DINOSAUR #18 (Marvel)
Writer: Amy Reeder; Brandon Montclare
Artist: Natacha Bustos
Cover: Amy Reeder
Ms. Reeder’s covers never fail to amaze, but this one might be my favorite to date!
BATMAN ’66 MEETS WONDER WOMAN ’77 (DC)
Writer: Jeff Parker; Marko Andreyko
Artist: David Hahn; Karl Kessel
Cover: Michael & Laura Allred
Uh-oh!! Ras has found Themyscira–but it’s not all bad, it’s “All-red”!! (Sorry.)
WONDER WOMAN #21 (DC)
Writer: Greg Rucka
Artist: Liam Sharp
Variant Cover: Jenny Frison
This lovely image by Ms. Frison headily plays on the themes of discovery and revelation! Her variants have been marvelous, so here’s hoping they’re collected in the trades!
BITCH PLANET #10
Writer: Kelly Sue DeConnick
Artist/Cover : Valentine De Landro
Presented without comment except…”YESSSS!!!”
PATSY WALKER, a.k.a. HELLCAT (Marvel)
Writer: Kate Leth
Artist/Cover: Brittney Williams
I’m tempted to say “Presented without comment…except ‘NOOOOO!!'”, as this is the final issue of this wonderful series, whose fun and inclusive nature is so beautifully portrayed in this image by Brittney Williams.
