Legendary Runs Episode 17: Jim Steranko’s Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

This episode of Legendary Runs is the result of when you mix an excellent topic with a terrific guest. We are focusing on Jim Steranko’s IMG_0352Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. with special guest Bob Reyer from the Talking Comics podcast. For one of our shorter runs, this might be our longest episode, which might be strangely appropriate. Steranko is often considered one of the more important comic book artist, yet only did a handful of interior comic work. The work that is here is absolutely game changing. Bizarre, enigmatic, dynamic, and sometimes psychedelic- it is a comic that at first brush might be more fun to look at than to read, but frankly there is plenty of charm in the story as well. It’s a comic that is both very of its time and evergreen.
If you think that is waxing poetic, wait until you hear the three of us talk about it!

Since this is such a visual comic (I know that sounds redundant), I’m going to include some of the images we discuss the most, below:

Matt Wood is a high school English teacher in North Arkansas. His classroom is littered with comic book posters and notes about Hawthorne that are as difficult to decipher as they are to be interested in. Not Matt's fault though, Nathaniel Hawthorne…
