Favorite Comic Book Covers of the Week 08/21/13/

Hello and welcome to the revised edition of Talking Comics: Favorite Comic Book Covers of the Week! It used to be that every week our Executive Editor Steve Seigh would showcase his favorite comic book covers of the week and then you could all go about your day. Well no more! From this point forward Steve won’t be the only one displaying the covers that caught his fancy. As of today, and for the foreseeable future, you’ll be viewing selections not only from Steve, but from other site staff and fans alike!

If you’d like to contribute to this column all you need to do is send Steve an email at SteveSeigh@TalkingComicBooks.com, telling him the title of the issue with the cover that you dig, as well as a brief description of why you’re grooving on that particular cover. We’ll try to include as many selections as possible and hope that you enjoy seeing your choices displayed for all of the internet to see.

So without further or due let’s get this week’s selections highlighted!

– Steve Seigh’s Favorite Comic Book Covers of the Week –

Daredevil #30

Story by Mark Waid
Art by Chris Samnee
Colors by Javier Rodriguez
Cover by Chris Samnee

It’s Chris Samnee, it’s Daredevil, it’s the freakin Silver Surfer. It’s Chris Samnee’s Silver Surfer, people! Automatic win!– Steve Seigh

Avengers Assemble #18

Story by Kelly Sue DeConnick
Art by Barry Kitson
Colors by Nolan Woodard
Cover by Jorge Molina

Duff Man! Can’t breathe!” Ha ha ha ha! But really, this cover’s got a lot going for it: Danger, gorgeous colors, a beautiful rendition of Spider-Woman, and a cover that says *@$# is going down!– Steve Seigh

There’s such a sense of foreboding, of imminent danger here that I’m almost afraid to look past the cover. Jorge Molina’s cover is of a piece with the Infinity/Avengers/New Avengers “event” covers, but still a stand-out on its own!– Bob Reyer

Fables #132

Story by Bill Willingham
Art by Mark Buckingham & Steve Leialoha
Colors by Lee Loughridge
Letters by Todd Klein
Cover by Joao Ruas

The vast majority of Fables covers are always beautiful and this one is no exception. I love the rich contrast of red on gold, and the overall “frosted” look of the at in the bottom left corner. It carries with it a bit of an Asian aesthetic and makes me wonder what is happening inside the pages of Fables lately.– Steve Seigh

X-Men Legacy #15

Story by Simon Spurrier
Art by Tan Eng Huat & Craig Yeung
Colors by Jose Villarubia
Letters by Cory Petit
Cover by Mike Del Mundo

D’awwwwwwww! Wook at da wittle Legion! SO cute! Like, pupy phone cute.– Steve Seigh

Wonder Woman #23

Story by Brian Azzarello
Art by Cliff Chiang
Colors by Matthew Wilson
Letters by Jared K. Fletcher
Cover by Cliff Chiang

The other evening I had the pleasure of sharing drinks with my girlfriend, Ms. Lauren Kolligs, and Mr. Bob Reyer. During our time together Bob and I had moved onto the topic of beards (like you do), and at one point or another he had informed me that there once was a t-shirt that had the phrase “Fear The Beard” printed on it. I laughed my ass off and immediately thought about that moment when I saw this cover. Wonder Woman fears no beard.-Steve Seigh

The way Diana looks on this cover showcases everything I’ve loved about Cliff Chiang’s art direction in this series. This is a Wonder Woman who is built like a brick shithouse, an Amazon that could probably kill you eight times before you hit the ground.  And the little bit of foreshadowing in the background is brilliant too.– Patrick Brennan

– Adam Shaw’s Favorite Comic Book Cover of the Week –

X-Men #4

Story by Brian Wood
Art by David Lopez
Colors by Cris Peter
Cover by Terry Dodson & Rachel Dodson

I love the relationship between Jubilee and Logan. Whether it’s Armor or Kitty Pryde, Logan has shown he can be a brother or father figure in the younger mutants’ lives. This cover captures all of that in a simple cover.– Adam Shaw

– Micheal Duke’s Favorite Comic Book Covers of the Week –

I Love Trouble #6

Story by Kel Symons
Art by Mark A. Robinson

I’ve only read the first couple of issues of I Love Trouble, but no matter where I went on Wednesday, this cover jumped out at me. I knew exactly what book it was because of the design, but having the title in Arabic makes for a fascinating visual. And then there is the caption, “Baghad, 923 A.D.” Awesome.”  – Mike Duke
