After a long wait which has seen practically every leading man in Hollywood rumored for the role, Benedict Cumberbatch is reportedly in final talks to become Doctor Strange, according to Variety and Deadline.
Marvel had already started the rumor mill flowing by booking a special event for press at the El Capitan theater in Los Angeles tomorrow. It has been speculated that the Doctor Strange casting could be formally announced at this event.
The Emmy Award-winning Cumberbatch is known for many roles, including his portrayal of the modern day Sherlock Holmes in the BBC’s Sherlock and Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness. He has garnered critical acclaim and Oscar buzz for his upcoming role as Alan Turing in the WWII drama The Imitation Game. Cumberbatch had been rumored for the role of Doctor Strange earlier in the year, but seemed to shoot down those reports, saying that filming would conflict with his London stage run in Hamlet. Previously, Marvel was said to be in talks with Joaquin Phoenix to don the cloak of the Sorcerer Supreme.
Doctor Strange is set to be released in 2016.
