Manga spotlight: My Love Story!!

My Love Story

Kazune Kawahara and Aruko’s manga series, My Love Story!!, defies classic shojo tropes by having the cute, adorable heroine fall for the best friend of the bishonen. Takeo is brash, headstrong, and scary to most women. When he saves Yamato on the subway, she falls head over heels in love with him. Takeo cannot believe his life; every girl he’s ever fallen for has rejected him in favor of Sunakawa, his more conventionally attractive best friend. The manga series documents the love Yamato and Takeo have with each other has they learn what it’s like to be a couple.

What makes My Love Story!! worth checking out is the genuine love story on the pages. Yamato wants to be closer to Takeo, and Takeo wants Yamato to be proud of him. He is so appreciative of every little action of love she performs. Yamato reassures Takeo by being steadfast and loyal girlfriend. If that isn’t your cup of tea, Sunakawa is presented as an asexual character. He recognizes the beautiful relationship between Takeo and Yamato, but he never appears jealous or even interested in having a girlfriend. He is 100% supportive of Takeo and helps Takeo navigate the relationship with Yamato.

Currently, there are seven volumes from Viz. and the eighth volume comes to North America on April 5th. There is also an anime series, which can be found on Crunchyroll.
