The Magicians Episode 3: Consequences of Advanced Spellcasting Recap

“Start slow.”  Words of wisdom from Pete to Julia concerning practicing magic.  “I don’t do slow,” says Julia.  As Dean does a voiceover to start “Consequences of Advanced Spellcasting,” he advises certain spells are too powerful for one magician to perform alone.  The spell can turn against you.  Oh yeah, Dean also has his eyes back.  He’s still blind, but at least there aren’t empty slots where his eyes should be.

The students of Brakebills will all have an area of expertise to study.  Quentin has a hard time finding his.  Alice will be studying light bending.  Speaking of Alice, she wants to attempt contacting her brother Charlie again.  That didn’t go so well last time.  But you gotta give it up for persistence.

We learn that the Van Pelt Fountain is said to be bottomless.  There are tales of bodies being in it.  This is proven true when an arm emerges from it giving a middle finger to the world.

Two side stories branch out as Eliot and Quentin go in search of the book Kady gave Marina last episode, and Margo and Alice look for Emily Greenstreet.  Emily was in the same class as Charlie.  The girls find Emily and convince her to spill her guts on what happened with Charlie.  Emily was dating a teacher at Brakebills.  She felt like she wasn’t good enough for him, so she tried a spell to make her prettier.  It backfired, and when Charlie used spells to reverse the outcome, the energies burned through him.  Charlie was consumed.  This goes back to Dean’s earlier statements about a spell turning against you.

Eliot and Quentin find the location of their missing book at Pete’s bodega, along with Julia.  In a romantic moment, the two book volumes make sweet love to one another.  Quentin and Julia come face-to-face since she started training at the bodega.  Things get pretty intense .  Quentin chastises Julia for lowering herself training with wanna-be magicians.  Insults are thrown, and a friendship looks to be coming to an end.

Dean and Prof. Sunderland reveal to Penny that he has the rarest and most difficult discipline — traveler.  He can travel anywhere.  Even to other worlds.  Quentin is the star of The Magicians, but Penny might prove to be the most powerful of the cast.

Alice and Quentin go to Van Pelt Fountain to resurrect Charlie.  He appears, but is it really him?  He’s violent towards Alice and Quentin.  In a last ditch effort to save Alice, Quentin binds Charlie to a box.  This enrages Alice.  She was so close to having her brother back.

Just as Alice and Quentin were starting to bond, this may drive a wedge between then.

The Magicians airs Mondays at 9pm ET on Syfy Channel.
