Amazon Acquiring ComiXology

Amazon announced today that it has reached an agreement to acquire digital comic distributor ComiXology, which will take full effect in the second quarter of this year. What this means is that ComiXology will now become an Amazon brand and made available to use on most digital reading devices including the Kindle, iOS and Android platforms through Amazon. The Guided View technology, which ComiXology had a hand in pioneering, will also become a part of Amazon, as per the deal. C0-founder and CEO of ComiXology David Steinberger reassured existing customers by saying that “ComiXology will retain it’s identity as an Amazon subsidiary.” He went on to say this about the acquisition:

“ComiXology’s mission is to spread the love of comics and graphic novels in all forms. There is no better home for comiXology than Amazon to see this vision through. Working together, we look to accelerate a new age for comic books and graphic novels.”

On the Amazon side of things, David Nagger, Vice President of Content Acquisition and Independent Publishing for Amazon, had this to say:

“Amazon and comiXology share a passion for reinventing reading in a digital world. We’ve long admired the passion comiXology brings to changing the way we buy and read comics and graphic novels. We look forward to investing in the business, growing the team, and together, bringing comics and graphic novels to even more readers.”
