I want to preface this review with: I’m usually not a fan of annual issues. I feel like they don’t add much to the series, and they’re difficult to place in the run. Daredevil’s annual is no different in either case. I have no clue where this issue fits in with Waid’s arc. With this particular book I don’t think it’s a bad thing.
Alan Davis took on writing and penciling this book. The story may be inconsequential to what is happening to Matt in the series proper, but it’s a fun divergence. We get a detective story with occult twist. I don’t know much about the Destine family, but it’s not really needed to enjoy the tale. There are quite a bit of characters tossed around here. None of the cameos get lost or feel excessive. If you go into this story expecting to be blown away with complex story, then you may leave disappointed. But if you go in with an open mind, you will be just fine.
Alan Davis gives us a completely different aesthetic then what we are used to. It’s modern, dark, and kinetic. The action scenes are well done, and that is fantastic because there is a ton of them. Daredevil gets handled pretty well in this book. Unlike most comics these days, DD’s annual doesn’t have many slow down character beats. It is high energy and hectic. Davis packs a lot into a single issue. You certainly get your money’s worth with this book.
Verdict
It’s worth a read. It is a fun and action packed ride. If you aren’t yet convinced to give it a read, then Dr. Strange’s Hulk Hogan mustache should erase any doubts you have left. It is all kinds of awesome. That’s worth five bucks by itself.
