BATWOMAN # 1took me a little by surprise with it’s otherworldly opening scenario of Batwoman nearly thwarting the abduction of three small children from inside the comfort of their own beds, a ghostly specter of a woman to blame for the incident. Right away we are thrust into the world of Batwoman, with little regard for retelling her history as a character. If, like me, you have no knowledge of her origins, you might just have to do a little research before reading this book as there is reference to past relationships, battles, and rivalries upon which none are given great detail here.
However, the book is jam-packed with such brilliant colors, character models, and intriguing story hooks that I hardly doubt you’ll be very worried about knowing all of the details right away. I’m sure things will explain themselves and become fleshed out over the next few issues upon which I am sure to be picking up as I love the Batman universe and am finding it very hard not to fall in love with this incarnation of Batwoman as well.
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW?
Batwoman apparently has a rich history within Gotham and the Batman universe. It might behoove you to do a little research into her character before starting this book as there seems to be plenty of references to adventures past. I’m just now exploring the character and am finding her demeanor, style, and wit to be just what I’ve always wanted in a female Batman equivalent.
VERDICT
Buy it – Brilliant artistry, a dark and sinister plot, sexy lead players, and so much more violence to come. What’s not to love?
